finally most of the coloring happens in gradient maps and adjustment layers. I try to pay attention to hue variations and materials to make sure it doesn't look flat.
I definitely haven't perfected it tho, i think more hue variation will be my goal in future pieces

After i made that post i got a huge boost of confidence opened sculptris and made the librianian model
Yes it took me three hours to do this
No the coloring isn't permanent
I don't sculpt 3d,i use pre-made models but i really proud of this one no matter how ugly is
