2. lineart (tried out a new brush!)
3. flat colour, planning background
4. shading and finish
For today's #SoundofSaturday is Simeon Solomon's 'A Prelude by Bach'. As a proponent of the Aesthetic movement, Walter Pater, said, 'All art constantly aspires towards the condition of music.' Solomon focuses on the harmony and abstract beauty of the composition, not on meaning.

I made this cute but fierce saproling token a few years ago for myself when I play Magic. I'm now trying to create more as a daily exercise in drawing and composition. I am trying to capture this look and energy. Cute, but fierce. :)
I generally like to work from reference photos when doing gouache, but for my more imaginary stuff I’ll often do a very quick digital sketch first to explore the composition and light! I don’t usually share these, but here-

Like I can honestly tell you this piece had no real planning to it. I just sketched out a composition I thought would be alright, and went with it. The color scheme changed as I went along and as it did, everything came together for me. Something I couldn’t have thought before it
