Overlapping forms. Avoid straight lines, only curves.
Use boxes and simple shapes for proportions -> gradually start figuring out "is this over or under?" -> add bulge -> ??? -> profit

Here is also a comparison between the sprite hydralisk design and the cinematic hydralisk design. The changes were originally mostly for readability- moving the arms forward stops them overlapping the tail from the side, crucial when you have about 6 pixels to work with.

Illustration is fakery,it's an illusion of representation & 3D space. An oval isn't an egg unless surrounded by other stuff that suggests it's an egg.Overlapping shapes,instead of letting them touch at a tangent, tricks the brain more convincingly that an object is behind another

I’m not the best at character design yet, but sketch to to finish this was about 1hr 45min. The vector line layers allow you to auto clip overlapping lines and they just added a time lapse feature.

Oh you can import PS brushes now too I think.

How did you made it to make the shadows so sharp? When I try to do something similar the shadows keep overlapping with one another and making these ugly gradients, have you perhaps ran into a similar issue?

I mostly used 2 tools: real pencil for sketch & line art, and lasso fill for coloring, erasing & filling in blocks. by blocking-in areas, it helps you focus on key points of the drawing and avoid confusion on overlapping parts. This is where you can find lasso fill. I use it alot
