1: I often begin with a few basic single color tiles to lay out a rough composition of the scene. Then chisel it out, taking turns between creating a new tile and seeing if one i've already made fits.
Tile based GFX editing is as much or more mosaics and carving as it is drawing

depends sometimes it kinda strikes me out of the blue, Vassi (left) here was an image i saw in a ceiling tile while day dreaming but Dominique (right) was intentional he was originally supposed to be a moth character that just developed with time bouncing ideas seeing what sticks
