Note that in his portrait drawings, which are intended to stand alone (these aren't studies--he continued doing these on commission after retiring as a portrait painter), we may see highlights (picked out afterwards with an eraser), but we don't see that same outlining of them.

I think I figured what's bothering me, it's the lack of outlines, not so much the smooth shading.

They use the shading to compensate having no outlines which gives an incomplete feeling to me.

Whereas in Looney Tunes: Back in Action they still had cartoony outlines.

Changed the outline to a dark purple and adjusted color balance a little
I don't like pure black outlines
I like to make highlights a little more yellow, midtones a little more red, shadows a little more blue, but play and see what works
