Rendering a cartoony design with superfluous realism is almost exclusively done for a comedic or uncanny effect. Because it looks hideous.

Pokemon designs are appealing in their simplicity. Deliberating adding a bunch of realistic bump maps and gritty textures misses the point.

Can confirm the Mettaur models used are the same as the one's in Command Mission just with different textures/UV's (Left is CMX & right is DiVE). Regular Mettaur looks slightly different as they modelled the Cross too (CMX models are ripped by Irregular Saturn btw).
