Anders Zorn is well known for his gorgeous limited color oil paintings. In both of these, he just uses one hue (probably burnt sienna or burnt umber.) He creates cooler versions of that hue by adding black.

So when I want a more dull/angsty vibe I go with a lower saturation level. A bit like rainy day weather. All the colors in this (except the marigolds) are at the same saturation level and it’s only the brightness&hue that’s adjusted
