Really its not that hard I just feel people are afraid to use it in character design and I don't know why?
Just focus on a interesting shape for movement and flow (4c hair moves people) and add dips and curves to represent texture.

it's kind of a like, weird design choice when you really look at it, but honestly i feel like the sinnoh godmons' faces' stripey deal thing would have a nice texture. like what i imagine whales feel like.

I tested out a blue highlight pen for the bow and the lips, but it didnt work well on this paper. In retrospect I do kinda wish I had pushed through and done the top with the same pen. Gave it a nice texture.
