I then did a quick values study, to see how I would like to lay the light and shadows in the piece. I actually was inspired by a previous piece of mine showing an abelisaur in a similar pose.

Some general faves. Kinda conflicted between Spectrovenator or other round faced derived abelisaurs like Skorpiovenator

Dino Fact!

Kryptops (Covered Face) is an abelisaurid from Early Cretaceous Africa! Its skull had traces of blood vessels on it, implying something was attached to its face, likely a covering of keratin, a material found in other structures in animals like horns!

Dino Fact!

Pycnonemosaurus (Dense Forest Lizard) is an abelisaurid from Late Cretaceous Brazil! Estimated at over 30 ft long, it might be the largest abelisaur we know of! Its fossils were found near some sauropod fossils too, meaning it might've hunted them!

The neotype, USNM 4734, has a fragmentary skull which underwent distortion. This lead to it being reconstructed with a very short snout that looks like an Allosaurid cosplaying as an Abelisaurid. This weirdness is what influenced the short snouted Allosaurus in WWD

Dino Fact:

Rugops (Wrinkle Face) is an Abelisaurid from Late Cretaceous Africa! It was named this after the grooves left on its skull by large blood vessels. Its skull also had 2 rows of 7 holes, which might've been there for a crest or horns to attach to.
