Interestingly the same is the case for H.G.Wells’ Aepyornis Island, where the elephant bird is depicted with a cassowary-like crest. It’s almost as if authors find the cassowary to be such an archaic looking creature that extinct birds must look the similar.

Cassowary people.
In my imagination , they will be descendants of actual cassowaries. They live in the forest and they would chased down and terminate anyone who step inside their territory just like the birds themselves.
