John Scott of Easting in the Orkneys was a fiddler who spent a year underground pleasing the #trows with his music. Told he'd never again lack for money, he had but put his hand in his pocket when he wanted it & it appeared. Until he told someone his secret...#FairyTaleTuesday

Today's #ArchiveAdventCalendar theme is #Reindeer Reindeer antlers were found in a peat bog in Rousay in the 1930s. They were a size larger than any previously recorded from Scotland. So reindeer were in Orkney in prehistoric times. #OrkneyArchiveAdvent2020 Ref: PSAS 1935-6 Vol20

#folklorethursday The Nuckelavee is Orkney's heavy-metal version of the centaur.
It appears as a horse and rider, but entirely skinless. As well as having long arms to scoop up unwary travellers, it also spreads plague and crop blight.
Few who see it live https://t.co/0fpRw1u1yp

The Stoor Worm was a gigantic sea serpent in Orcadian mythology, capable of destroying animals & humans with it's putrid breath.
In folklore a 'worm' or 'wurm' is generally a dragon without legs & wings, often inhabiting water. #mythologymonday #Orkney
