In Slavic lore, the great witch Baba Yaga doesn't use a broomstick to fly. Instead, she uses it to cover her tracks, as she travels 'round in a flying mortar; pushing herself with a pestle. Wherever she goes, the elements groan & a host of spirits accompany her.

My favorite in is the Russian Baba Yaga! Living deep amid the forest in a turning chicken-leg hut; fortified by watching skulls. Known to help strays, she gets around on a flying pestle &mortar; using a broom to sweep away her tracks.

One of my faves, Baba Yaga! Was really feeling that retro mortar and pestle.
