Sadly it also applied to a lot of older stuff too, not hairstyles but facial hair.

Gnomes and Pandaren got insanely downgraded in Shadowlands, because their beards were all made with the 2D textures in mind and now all look glued on instead.

Couple of examples- I think I could do this same idea a lot better now. Different colors, I got better paper textures… a little less scribbly texture, nix the red. Find a ballpoint pen or pencil kinda look.

btw I think this is being displayed incorrectly, I believe the helm actually hides the face/head mesh of the player character and shows the shade+spooky eyes and the face is currently in front of the helm foreground texture.

Here's an old sketch on it to show the color variation I was able to get (fairly sure I used a waterbrush fwiw), I don't scrub much either- I find it a smooth enough surface for drawing on with pen and textured enough to show watercolor too in an affordable spiral-bound pad

The low poly/game model for the Power Suit mod is almost ready! Textures for the first costume have been completed for the most part. Just have to convert it all into Smash's format.
