1859年（安政6年）、前年1858年に締結された日米修好通商条約により、函館、横浜、長崎の港が開港した。
条約は第14代将軍・徳川家茂とアメリカ総領事タウンゼント・ハリスとの間で調印されました。
これに基づいて「横浜カレーの日」でもあります。
