I find occasionally putting your work in greyscale helps immensely in seeing the values. High contrast in values creates visual interest, which can be helpful in establishing focal point/mood. Take this work of mine for example, the lighter values in the eye create a focal point

Forgive my camera quality but its so clever the contrasting animation styles! The "townies" are mostly angular, stiffly animated and very clean. Even Robyn when she's switches to a townie mindset is animated completely different than when she's with Mehb.
