Hair shader blending using some normal tricks. Partially aligning the normals towards the camera flattens the shading and makes the hair look less like cylinders. +bevel node to blend intersecting strands together. Try the nodes or Normal Edit mod (direction + camera target) #b3d

The hair is modeled flat off to the side as bundles of tapered cylinders. It gets subsurf, then normals transferred from a slightly curved plane. Layering the plans helps avoid artifacts. Then tapered with a lattice, and put on the curves around the head with curve modifier. #b3d
