These "clean" tile-based pieces kinda start looking like vector graphics when upscaled :)

Samurai Warrior: The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo

Firebird

1988

More than just a beat ‘em up, Samurai Warrior is an inventive & absorbing game with excellent graphics, a cool, zen atmosphere & superb, varied gameplay. One of the C64’s best.

Although I loved the version of this, it was the ZX I played first and enjoyed it, I think it captures the Cartoon very well

My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.7

Barbarian

Palace

1987

Although the sequel was a stunner, I prefer the simpler, fine-tuned, one-on-one combat gameplay of the original. A superb beat 'em up, with great sound, graphics & animation & plenty of humour it’s incredibly playable.

Barbarian II

Palace

1988

This mix of beat ‘em up & arcade adventure is a very slick package that was stunning when first released. Awesome graphics, a tense atmosphere & immediately addictive, gory gameplay made it stand out from the crowd.

Though I will readily admit the C64 version is ugly as sin in comparison. 😄 Loved it as a kid, but I have no patience these days with its learn-by-dying game mechanic. 🤔

I saw a genuine arcade Paperboy machine once, when I was on holiday in Australia. Damned thing chewed up my credits so quick I gave up on it. 😋

Played the heck out of the C64 conversion though. 👍

A big improvement on the original with excellent backgrounds, superbly drawn sprites, more varied & enjoyable gameplay, & a miles better control system (joystick only, no clumsy keys!). An excellent brawler.
