Like, this isn't good but this is usually how I approach trees from a small distance. I work dark-to-light, and I'll usually add lighter and lighter shades as I get to the top, and then make the outline lighter towards the top as well

Heya! There's a couple ways to do the outline, depending on which program you're using!
In this case I used Clip Studio paint, all you have to do is find the Layer property tab and click this and it'll do it for you :>
