My quick and dirty process boils down to:

1. A sheet of silhouettes.
2. A value (greyscale) painting of the best few.
3. A layer with the blend mode set to "color" over the value.

To be fair, I also feel like Halo 5's scorpion has lost its distinct silhouette in favor of a more compact, square design. The previous tanks looked far more like their arachnid namesake, imo. I always thought that was really cool and unique.
