Ok, couldn't resist #100percentzoom; definitely useful to see just how messy this stuff gets before it's shrunk down for reproduction as whatever product. And for the record, I almost never work on stuff at 100%. 25-33% is typical, often pulling out to 16%. I like painterly!

When I did pixel art way back when, I did it much the same way I do a lot of art today, by using lots of soft brushes to make smooth shading.
Now, I typically tend to do a base later and build up several layers of shading to create more of a pixel aesthetic sort of look.
