Kind of cheat a little bit cuz I always use the saturation blend tool. To help me understand between black and white a little bit more. However I do feel like I don't play around with extreme whites.

i think i figured it out a bit, you have to make a symbol on top of the drawing and outline the shading with the light parts and set the symbol effects to blur on high quality with like 20 pixels or larger/smaller depending on the size of the drawing, then set blending to "add"
