I still have that problem and use that technique actually! Sketch brushes are very thin and hard to work with (but i love that crunch) I just lower the blur effect setting significantly and set the duplicated layer to multiply now!

Add some white shapes to top it off. Duplicate white later, set it under the first. Filter, gaussian blur it to add a nice glow effect.

Found a cheeky way that worked with this. I duplicated the model and flipped the normals then combined.
