While the original Kikstart was fun but frustrating, KS2 got everything right. Superb graphics, brilliant fun gameplay (especially in 2 player mode) & an incredible construction kit make for an awesome game.

Did any 80s kid not have a copy of this in their collection? A Super Sprint derivative that's simple, but top fun - especially when played with a friend. Decent graphics & music too. A budget classic.

Inspired by Side Arms, Zybex is a top-drawer game that's beautifully polished and presented. Fantastic graphics, simultaneous 2 player co-op gameplay, and 16 levels of challenging action - incredible value at under £3.

Master of Magic

MAD 1986

Budget titles tended to be arcade games, but this terrific RPG bucked the trend. Well-designed, brilliantly atmospheric, fast-paced & exciting, it’s fantastic. The incredible Hubbard SID is the icing on the 😋 cake.

Finders Keepers

Mastertronic 1985

A watershed in budget games, Finders Keepers proved that low prices didn’t have to mean low quality. This early Mastertronic game is a hugely addictive platformer / puzzle game / arcade adventure. Excellent.

The C64 hosted a dozen or so darts games, but this was easily my favourite. With decent graphics and sound, loads of daft humour and fun gameplay, it really hits the bullseye – especially when played with friends.

Rack It 1988

Inspired by Armalyte, Salamander and thrash metal, this budget blaster is far more polished than most cut-price games. With excellent graphics & sound & great gameplay it's a lot better than many full-price shoot 'em ups.

AFAIK this is the only computer game based on a packet of crisps, but I could be wrong. Even Weetabix had its own game in the 80s. Riding around town, collecting items & trying to ride the rollercoaster is top fun.

Here we go. Barrelling on into the middle of an ST tweet, and going on about the Amiga version.

You could tell it was less-complete than the C64 version, and rushed. So I'll still go for the C64 version and most likely the ST version too, though I've yet to see it. (one day.) 😄

I Ball! I-I-I-Ball! This original blaster is perhaps best remembered for its superb speech – 'Oh no!', 'I Ball!' 'Game Over!' - & amazing Rob Hubbard soundtrack. A tough but fast, furious & highly playable game.

Ultima V was stunning but *so* *much* *loading*! 😮
So it's absolutely transformative to be able to play it on the C64 now, with music, with no disk-swapping, and near-instantaneous loading. These single-disk and easyflash re-releases are making life so easy for us now. 😁

Chimera

Firebird 1986

At £3.99 Chimera was a bit pricier than your average budget title but it was worth it. Lovely colourful isometric graphics, a fab Hubbard SID tune & utterly absorbing gameplay make it an excellent arcade adventure.

Yeah, I started with C64 Ultima III, and it was kinda of a standard classic RPG: choose race/class/stats for each player, different wizard and cleric spells, etc. 🤔 And the 3D dungeons have this stark look, and they're dangerous and confusing. That might well be intentional. 😄
