"grimdark" comes from the warhammer 40,000 tagline "in the grim darkness of the far future there is only war" which is deliberately camp with a satirical bent, a intent which is much clearer paired w/the original grody, bizarro & dynamic illos by grunge masters like john blanche

Honestly? The original Eastman/Laird run (I think it’s just called Volume One) from 1984-1993 is what I love because it’s that perfect blend of everything that an 80s independent comic should be. It’s goofy and ridiculous and sprinkled with occasional self-serious grimdark.
