1. Kendo is inspired by anime, "Rurouni Kenshin", which is also referenced by the kanji.

2. Not only does he wear "Sharingan" inspired earrings, but the zipper of his jacket also says "The Fourth Hokage", a homage to Minato Namikaze.

It's actually 鳥(bird) and 口(mouth), so it's easy to keep track of if you know those two kanji. Though this kanji is also used for all sorts of general noises now.

It's primarily used for Shinto-Buddhist temples, and you can see it in the kanji - it has a layered roof and a big ornate entrance. Associations like this make it much easier to remember a kanji. ^_^
