If you visit the #Ashmolean before 15 November don't miss the superb free exhibition downstairs celebrating wood engraving from 1920 to now. This beauty by David Gentleman (b. 1930) will be familiar to anyone who uses #CharingCross tube station.
Some Sunday Ravilious with a 1930s Wood-engraving; reflecting the touch of autumn as she shakes the trees, and that final glow of the year which transforms our countryside into a mix of wonderful colour, signalling those first steps towards winter’s cold hand.

What a lovely scene. The talking parrot and the daintily singing canary - Since there is no canary bird far and wide the engraving and the poem refrs to the charming lady sitting in the middle ground playing the flute.

This engraving from her 1680 ‘New Book of Flowers’ was promoted for botanical study, but Merian understood how it could & would be used as a pattern book if she made the prints pattern-like, transferable to textile. #museumbuddy
Merian is best known as a printmaker, botanical artist & entomologist (just a few things!), but like most 17th c. women, she was trained in needlepoint and fabric making from about age 8. Here's an early, gorgeous (!!!) hand-coloured engraving from the 1670s #museumbuddy
May I present how art process & materials impact content?

Botanist, entomologist and botanical illustrator Georg Dionysius #Ehret died #OnThisDay 1770. Engravings after his botanical paintings were reproduced onto Chelsea porcelain.
Carle Vernet exhibited this drawing and its pendant, The Return from the Race,at the Salon of 1800, where they received wide acclaim. So popular were the scenes that another artist then produced engravings after them, which were exhibited at the Salon of 1808. #ArtHelps
