The two styles I’ve considered were Forces, where the frames are clearly separated from the eyes.
Or a more cartoony approach where it’s almost like the glasses ARE the eyes, a la Iggy Koopa or Dr. Fox as shown.

mario is another example of this done super well, but in 3D - his recent depiction takes advantage of the new hardware, without sacrificing any of what makes mario.. well, mario. extra depth and detail in all the right places, without looking jarring or losing its cartoony flair.
