Yes! They are a control surface/wing the same as ailerons, rudder, etc to creates lift/drag for the same reasons any other wing does. I still do some cheating with where the forces are applied to keep things simpler and more controllable, but the same is true for all the wings.

Did this leggy boy over the course of today. He's still hollow, gappy of course but I'm happy with it. Will be adding joints and surface detail, most likely in a fashion.

Alas, his 'chin' still bugs me and I think it could be a lot sharper. W'dya think?

I don't know if this'll help, but I always skew towards bright pink for subsurface scattering for purple / blue skinned creatures. It's analogous to the bright warmth of red/orange against tan thru brown skin, since it's a step brighter + more warm
