Thank you! I made it using shapes to spawn the leaf particles in the tree. Then i transferred the normals of the blob shape onto the new leaf particles. I went through a few different designs of the textures first

i know this is not exactly vfx wise, but i wish they'd play more with her tails. maybe finally add the smokey effect on her SB skin, make her Elderwood tails more translucent... and PLEASE add more variety to her charm particles! all of them being only pink hearts is kinda boring

Fucking around with concepts for a Half Life 2 mod. Main idea is to let the player, a character that betrayed the combine mid uprise, at some point side with a particle storm using some device to talk to it.

OHHHH my goodness I finally got it to work!

I managed to get the gahddamn particles to fade in and out while STILL using Blender Render engine nodes!

Every tutorial I could find does it with shader nodes, which are only available under Cycles. Turned out I didn't need either!

As for the dust it's just a basic dissolve with a procedural oronoi + static noise. The noise moves with the particles, the voronoi is in world space.
The dissolve is also biased when the camera is near, as a neat way to integrate depth fade without ruining the effect.
