Tokyo Xanadu is a super fun JRPG. I love that the MC is made in a way where he avoids a lot of potential tropes. The other party members are wonderful as well! Add in really fun combat and great twists, and it's a must play game!

My take for the shadowy faces is that they symbolize an emotional detachment. They're used for the moment a character has embraced the worst within them. They feel like voids ready to drag the innocent ones if they're not careful.
