I’ve been thinking about extinct South American lately so yesterday I sketched these. 1: Pyrotherium, an Oligicene pyrotherian; 2: A male Granastrapotherium, a Miocene astrapothere; 3: Toxodon, a notongulate than went extinct less than 8,000 years ago.

Picture of a red squirrel in the absence of the real thing. Sometimes understanding biodiversity means noticing the absence of things and sadly we have an absence of red squirrels.

Weighing in at just 2 grams, the Kitti’s hog-nosed bat 🦇 is the smallest mammal in the 🌎. It’s so small that it’s often mistaken for a bumblebee, giving rise to its other name, the bumblebee bat.

I’ve always thought early mammals crept around at night to avoid being eaten by dinosaurs.

A fossil of this fellow had a small dino in its stomach, showing that predation was a two-way street.

I've finally decided to do art of this character, mainly because I need to get better at drawing buff mammals, and I think I did an okay job!

Oh, and I also gave him a name!

Finally found the courage to draw all Arkhe's physical forms.
They basicly change shape according to function, in order: flyer, arctic, aquatic, pet, climber, runner, fighter. I tried to base all anatomies on mammals.

Reptile is a paraphyletic grouping: It doesn't make evolutionary sense – unless you include birds.

Likewise, monkey is a paraphyletic grouping unless you include humans and the other apes, and fish is a paraphyletic grouping unless you include mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
