Released in time for the '84 LA Olympics, David Crane’s Decathlon is a joystick annihilator - esp. the 1500M! With big, lovely, brilliantly animated sprites & superb gameplay, it’s incredibly impressive for 1984.

Andrew Spencer adapted International Soccer for basketball and came up with another cracking sports game. Visually and sonically very similar to I.S. it also shares the same superb playability.

BMX Simulator 1986

Codemasters

This sold in huge numbers and launched Codemasters' ‘Simulator’ games series. Super Sprint with BMXs, it’s simple but a great laugh when played with mates, and the action replay was very cool at the time.

I thought the barbarians looked a little 'odd' compared to other C64 fighting games, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why. Not until Zzap!64 pointed out that you could connect the pins at the back to try to reset, and the figures would stay frozen on screen. Ah! Not sprites!

Hardball!

Accolade 1985

Probably the only C64 game to be in a Hollywood movie (The Princess Bride) Hardball! is an excellent baseball sim with action & management elements. Brilliant graphics & playability make it a very enjoyable game.
