It was obviously a C64 take on Karate Champ at the arcade. But that had quite basic, cartoon-y graphics. The characters and backgrounds in Exploding Fist seemed 'realistic'. Like a whole step up from that. Very rare to see something that looked better than its arcade counterpart.

International Karate, and IK+ came out reasonably soon after Exploding Fist. And they kinda took all the air out of the room. So I think people forget what a landmark game Exploding Fist was at the time. There was no 8-bit fight-game that could even touch it. It was a stunner. 👊

im a little late on this, but here's a fun fact!

before the ultra horsemen got their ultra titles, i called them gigantamax horsemen and used it both jokingly and for inspiration - even down to the idea of them exploding on death!
i finally had a chance to make it a reality.

Thinking about WiGE fighters. Given lack of tail rudder, perhaps tight turns by dragging a wingtip float on the water? Or would that cause it to snap off a wing/flip over hilariously? Also, big incentive not to bail out unless you have a 0-0 ejection seat or exploding prop.

Carrera's original Skill was written in Kanji and roughly translates to "Super-Heavy Magnetic Exploding Star".

Isola's Skill was changed to "Wonderful Rush" to reference the single of the same name from Love Live.
