The easiest way I can put it is if you look at the original model compared to my edits (You'll have to zoom in)
Normal maps work wonders cos the UV maps (Normal maps being essentially detail textures while UV maps are the assortment of faces to fit into complicated textures)

I found it easiest to work with a low poly mesh with subsurface modifier on it. Less points to move around so you can really focus on getting the shape right. Google images "3D Face Topology" can guide with where to put poles and loops.
