I wish I'd ever seen this game in the arcades. I think I would have had a lot of fun for it. 🤔 But for me, it's a lot like Green Beret: I played the C64 conversion for many years. Eventually found the arcade game, and went "huh, this isn't so hard now, is it?" 😋

Shinobi, in MAME, is a lot better than the C64 port. 😁 Faster, prettier, more enemies on screen. A good illustration at what the gap was between arcade games and home computers at the time. 🤔 The level layouts were very well translated. Often large bits are cut out in a port.

Definitely. I went and played the arcade game in MAME a couple of days later, and was really amazed at how well the levels matched. The C64 version was just a bit harder, because upper/lower levels were more often off screen, and jumping between them was slower.

I'm not sure people realise just how much of an impact Street Fighter 2 had on gaming. Arcades were filled with cabinets of this massive hit.

So, if you were wondering "did anyone Shinobi this week?" I would say "yes, yes I did." 😁 I first played it, as a kid, on the C64. (I'm not sure I ever saw the arcade cab.) And I really liked it. The main platforming action was well designed, and the 3D bonus stages are fun. 😎
