Oh this is getting interesting! Doing some more research and there's a collision map and a regular tile map for the final rendered sprites to overlay! It looks like the collision map was used to get a Z position of Mario, or some representation of that. Iiiinteresting

whitewashing does because there's plenty of white characters. Also, making her white /=/ "making her pretty" she was pretty before, you're just racist.
