Have you tried image bashing in a photo editing program? Taking the parts of images that rendered out well, combining them in PS, and tossing in a low diffusion redraw is how I made this from one of my 3D renders.

It took a few re renders, to get something passable on it, cause it confused Claire's fingers being fused together. Or warped.
But the Faceplay one on the right, seemed to keep her hair color, and gave her a neutral hoodie color but kept her pants the same color.

A lot of modern indie RPGs really emphasize brightly colored pixel art, but my memory of JRPGs often enforce very dark and harsh lighting with very clay like forms and rendering. Which is likely an art-style side effect of the lighting tools available.
