The Turk, or The Automaton Chess Player, took the world by storm. Built by Kempelen in 1769, it could've given Elizabeth Harman a run for her money. It beat Napoleon, Franklin and Catherine Great. Only 50 years later did they realise there was a tiny chess master hiding inside.
