1 Apr 1781 Ramsey’s Mill, NC Gen Nathanael Greene’s army of a mere 1,500 breaks camp & resumes the offensive against Lt Col Francis Rawdon, who commands British forces in SC & GA. Greene plans to reduce the small garrisons scattered across both states.

1 Apr 1776 Halifax, NS Some 1,200 Loyalist refugees from New England arrive. The first wave of an eventual tally of 40,000 who will escape north during the course of the war and its conclusion.

29 Mar 1779 Philadelphia, PA Continental Congress suggests SC & GA recruit 3K slaves into the army & emancipate them after the war & pledges $1,000 compensation for each.

27 Mar 1775 Thomas Jefferson was selected as a delegate to the 2nd Continental Congress, replacing Peyton Randolph. Other Virginia delegates are George Washington, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Harrison, Richard Henry Lee, & Edmund Pendleton.

14 Mar 1781 Guilford Court House, NC. American Gen Nathanael Greene positions his army in three lines consisting of militia, & Virginia & Maryland Continental Line infantry plus cavalry under Col Henry Lee & Col William Washington. He awaits the British.

24 Feb 1780 Virginia Col William Washington’s 3rd Continental Light Dragoons clash with Lt Col Banastre Tarleton’s Legion cavalry along the Ashley River, NC. Washington’s cavaliers repel the British but then withdraw to Monk’s Corner.

23 Feb 1781 Gen Nathanael Greene’s army reinforced by 600 Virginians & crosses the Dan R, beginning a new campaign in the Carolinas. He would lose more battle than win, but his strategic maneuvering tied down British forces & enabled the populace to rally.

13 Feb 1779 Augusta, GA. Lt Col Archibald Campbell learns of the approach of American Gen Benjamin Lincoln’s army and retreats toward Savannah. A large militia force under Gen John Ashe closely trails his column.

7 Feb 1778 Philadelphia, PA British General Howe was replaced by Henry Clinton as the Commander-in-Chief of North America. Howe had been passed up by Burgoyne put after the disaster at Saratoga, and George III swiftly put Clinton in charge.

4 Feb 1776 NYC A patriot force under Gen Charles Lee enters the city the same day British Gen Henry Clinton’s expedition to SC drops anchor in NY harbor. Clinton claimed he was visiting Loyalist NY Gov Tryon. He eventually sails south to SC.

3 Feb 1781, Gen Nathanael Greene & his troops cross the Yadkin R. to evade Gen Charles Cornwallis. Crossing followed Patriot losses at the Catawba R. & Tarrant's Tavern, as well as from heavy rains & roiling rivers. His army would live to fight again.
