Lady Fuchsia Groan from Gormenghast.
I painted this when I was 18.
Mixed media.
Unfinished and damaged (I decorated a wall, and she got splattered), it was partly a self-portrait, but I wanted to try to capture Fuchsia.
I'll be 62 tomorrow. Maybe I should now try to finish her?

Maeve Gilmore was a painter, writer and illustrator whose early promise in the 1930s was disrupted first by war and then by marriage to Mervyn Peake, author of the Gormenghast trilogy of novels, whose career she put selflessly before her own.

The wonderful Mervyn Peak.
My first experience of his work was the Gormenghast trilogy. From then onwards I became transfixed by his life and beautiful work. A tragic life sadly.

I keep working on my sketches from the Gormenghast trilogy. I hope to finish it before the new tv series will be released. (Maybe knows something about that project?)

The Old King's Crown

A game about the end of rule. Inspired by King Lear and Gormenghast. A game of hidden information, of tailoring and managing your deck to out manoeuvre your opponents as you simultaneously clash over important regions.

Talkies continued this trend and gothic horror remained in the public imagination, evolving with works like Gormenghast, the Universal Horror films, and countless horror comics: but the black and white of the pre-Technicolor age left its mark

As well as writing the Gormenghast novels, Mervyn Peake was a very talented book illustrator. The following are from: Bleak House, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and Treasure Island! The Gothic styling really sticks in your mind, Haunting.
