March 12, 1784, birthday of Victorian oddball, theologian & geologist William Buckland. He described the first as Megalosaurus in 1824 based on a fragmentarily preserved jaw.

If you wanted a Quadrupedal Carnivore Dinosaur, the Crystal Palace Megalosaurus was RIGHT THERE.

Here’s my take; Sarkovorax. It’s essentially a modernized Crystal Palace Megalosaurus reconstructed as a speculative animal that we will never find fossil evidence of.

William Buckland (1784-1856)
Was an English theologian, Dean of Westminster, geologist and palaeontologist. He wrote the first full account of a fossil dinosaur, which he named Megalosaurus, who were later reconstructed to be shown at the Crystal Palace.

- until 1923 that it was finally reclassified, as German paleontologist Friedrich von Huene had realized that the remains did not belong to Megalosaurus and decided to create a new genus for them, giving Erectopus the name that we now know it by! (2/2)

It’s definitely a relic of the “Acrocanthosaurus as an oversized Megalosaurus” era of palaeoart, with Megalosaurus always being depicted as a nearly neckless hunchback at the time.

These examples by Helen Roney Sattler, Steve Kirk, and Joseph Sibal are good examples.

Among the dinosaurs that roamed the south of England was Megalosaurus bucklandii — a sharp-toothed, carnivorous reptile that weighed 1.4 tonnes and measured nine metres in length.
