Piet Mondrian, the squares guy, was a skilled artist. This painting of Winterswijk is like the earliest painting on the Mondrian website. He wasn't drawing squares because he couldn't do landscapes.

Also...he didn't use a ruler. That's BY HAND.

Hilma af Klint is sadly not my friend, but she is often forgotten by history. She is one of the first abstract artists, an honor we usually reserve to men like Kandinsky or Mondrian, despite her work predating theirs.

Of course in the early 20th century there was a brief paradigm shift, which with artists like Mondrian, Malevitch, Brancusi, Kandinsky and the Bauhaus school delved really early into complete geometric abstraction. The emphasis here is in "geometric". "Objectivity" was the goal.

Mondrian, known for his colorful grids, painted about 150 portraits of flowers, mostly with just one flower at a time. I found this spellbinding - just notice how those lines turn into a ball of curling petals!
