So strange. They made the baffling creative choice to go with a hyper-realistic animation style, which makes the dramatic wide shots look great, but all the musical numbers in this SONG movie are visually dull and the penguins' beaks are a horror to look upon.

(I just used black to compare the two penguins here.)

Yup, the penguins' natural color is blue, as seen in EP & PC.

It's canon that the colors are paint. Colors weren't introduced until PC3, which launched on 3/31/05.

Since Rockhopper was red when he left on 3/8/05, it means colors debuted sometime before/around early March 2005

Of course, CP's early art was pretty inconsistent, so the exact hue is up for debate. However, it's safe to assume that the shade is "Old Blue", given the color's in-game unavailability & testing usage.
