#OnThisDay 1645: Parliamentarians formed the New Model Army to fight the Royalists in the English Civil War. Its soldiers, many of whom held radical and dissenting views, were full-time professionals rather than part-time militia.
Today 23 October is the anniversary of the battle of Edgehill fought in 1642 between Royalists and Parliamentarians during the English Civil War.
Both sides hoped for a decisive victory but the battle ended inconclusive and was just the beginning of a long and bloody war!

Both sides fire 'in the faces of one another, hacking and slashing ... neither party gained or lost a foot of ground, as if everyone were resolved there to breathe their last'.
Sir Marmaduke Langdale's royalists are defeated.
'The Sucklington Factions, or Roaring Boyes' (1641) alleged that some #Royalists 'scorne an Alehouse' & instead 'daily haunts Tavernes', where 'by his liquor' they 'like the Elephant through the juice of #Mulberries' are 'enraged unto bloud & most damnable resolutions'.
On this day 1643. Lord Willoughby of Parnham captured royalist Gainsborough, as well as the Earl of Kingston & 250 royalists.
Kingston's house holds out until the next day & upon its surrender 'a great store of treasure' was taken. But within weeks, the royalists retook the town.

Ralph Hopton's royalists fight their way up the 150 foot hill.
Overnight, the parliamentarians withdraw, but Hopton is then blinded by an accidental gunpowder explosion - 'hardly so much life as not to be numbered with the dead'.
John Hampden, Civil War-era Parliamentary leader famous for his opposition to Charles I over ship money, died #OnThisDay 1643 from wounds sustained in a skirmish with Royalists. In the early 19th c., British radicals named their debating societies ‘Hampden Clubs’ in his honour.

The Mayor had the drawbridge raised, but let it down upon sight of Langdale's commission from the Prince of Wales.
Next day, royalists take #Carlisle, offering the Scottish army a route into England
