Battle is joined. 1588 the English Fleet first engaged with the at Eddystone Rocks off the coast of Plymouth. After a fierce but inconclusive naval skirmish; Francis Drake turned his ship 'Revenge' back to loot the abandoned Spanish ships at nightfall.

🌊#OTD in 28 May 1588, the began to disembark from Lisbon to invade England. Due to its size, the fleet took two days to leave port. The fleet was composed of 132 ships, with 7,000 sailors and 17,000 soldiers. In command was the Duke of Medina Sidonia.

Spanish Armada vessel El Gran Grifon wrecked on Fair Isle. Crew shipped to Anstruther in Fife. For some reason Captain's chess was left at Newbattle Abbey in Dalkeith and is still there today.

“The defeat of the Spanish Armada” by Philiippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg. Painted two centuries after the Battle of Gravelines that it depicts, it is over dramatic - but I do still like it.

Spanish Armada in Scottish waters 1588. Tantallon Castle. El Gran Grifon jammed on Fair Isle. Crew shipped to Anstruther in Fife. Grifon Captain's chest is still held at Newbattle Abbey in Dalkeith. He may have stayed there for a time.
