Harold II, king of the English, reached Tatecastre (Tadcaster, Yorkshire) with all his levies in 1066. There he prepared to fight his brother Tostig Godwineson and Harald Hardrada, king of Norway. Harold may have covered the 200 miles from London in as little as five days.

6 December 1642 Royalist forces under William Cavendish, Earl of Newcastle defeated Ferdinando, Lord Fairfax at leaving Parliamentarian forces in Yorkshire divided. Newcastle then took the opportunity to secure Pontefract.
