Based on @Paleoartologist observation that scale size and coloration often doesn't correlate I wonder if the scale patterns in Edmontosaurus are instead linked to folds and ridges, similar to tuataras, making the whole thing more functional than ornamental.
@btoandbatbooks In the very next panel, Tuatara retaliates, and delivers to Iron Man a little… SPAMM! There’s no email folder large enough to hold that!
For #FossilFriday here's the newly described rhynchocephalian (#tuatara relative) #Opisthiamimus from the Jurassic of Wyoming, USA. Many thanks to @JCsotonyi (https://t.co/5Vx8iZS2bo) for the magnificent restoration. DeMar et al. 2022 @JournalSystPal:

This is the CT-scanned skull of #Navajosphenodon sani, a 190 million-year-old tuatara relative from Arizona, USA. It shows that many tuatara features were already present at a time when dinosaurs were just hitting their stride. #FossilFriday #SciNews

I drew some tuataras again finally. Trying to get a better grasp on their head shape
The age of the fossil (225-231 million years, alongside some of the earliest dinosaurs) also suggests that lots of lepidosauromorph lineages (lizards and relatives + tuataras and relatives) coexisted early in the Mesozoic. 🎨 by Jorge Blanco
