During her time at the School of Visual Arts, Simpson interned at the Studio Museum in Harlem and saw up close the practice of David Hammons who was an artist in residence.

Artists Eldzier Cortor and Gus Nall were other Chicago based artists that were greatly influential to Motley. Cortor was known for his nude paintings of Black women. He wanted to show the strength that a Black woman possesses.

During Motley’s time at the Art Institute of Chicago, the schools’ conservative style was prohibiting to his modernist-jazz work, so he kept them a secret until after graduating years later.
