Born #OTD 1753, Thomas Bewick, artist, naturalist. Zoologist , bookseller, and Fellow of @LinneanSociety, William Yarrell (1784-1856) named a species of swan after him.
Butler Gallery is very saddened to hear of the death of #PaulineBewick. What a wonderful contribution she made to Ireland's cultural legacy.

Sad news spreading this afternoon of the death of Pauline Bewick. She spoke to me twice for the show, and was full of wisdom, energy, infectious joy, passion, exuberance, mischief and vitality. Her sensuous and sensitive work endures. What a gift we had in her. One of a kind.

Thomas Bewick–died #OTD 1828–was an early campaigner for fair treatment of animals; objecting to the docking of horses' tails, the mistreatment of performing animals, & cruelty to dogs. Above all, he thought war utterly pointless, & incorporated these themes in his engravings.
