Cetiosaurus.
A painting from my upcoming book “Project:Tepui”. An intentionally out-dated reconstruction of this sauropod dinosaur, in keeping with the book’s retro-aesthetic. (I’m adding that disclaimer to pre-empt the palaeo-police. Because I’m tired.)

When the bones of Cetiosaurus were first discovered, they were thought to have belonged to an extremely large aquatic animal. Upon closer investigation, it turned out that Cetiosaurus was not a marine reptile and actually a terrestrial sauropod. Art by

A discussion about tail dragging sauropods reminded me of this painting of "Rutellum" from 2016. Rutellum was a pre-Linnaean dinosaur named after a tooth that is now lost. I basically just drew Cetiosaurus, so when I remake this eventually, I'll make it Cetiosaurus proper.

Cetiosaurus was a herbivorous sauropod that lived in Europe and Africa over 160 million years ago. Its name means ‘whale lizard’, due to the original remains being mistaken for a giant sea creature, initially thought to be an enormous crocodile!
